Call for freelance interpreters / research assistants
The Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo is an academic institute established by Leiden University. Seven Dutch and Flemish universities are partners in the institute. The institute stimulates research and teaching in the Middle East and contributes to the internationalization of the home universities. NVIC facilitates research projects mainly in the fields of Arabic and Islamic studies, Egyptology, Archaeology and Social Studies on MA, PhD and postdoctoral level for Dutch and Flemish students and scholars. The institute represents the universities in other disciplines as well, on a more general level.
Research Assistant Pool
The NVIC receives researchers for varying periods of study and fieldwork during the year. Some of our guest researchers do not speak (enough) Arabic to conduct their fieldwork in Egypt. In order to support them with their fieldwork the NVIC is setting up a interpreters / research assistant pool. We are looking for freelance interpreters / research assistants who are willing to assist the researcher during his/her stay in Egypt by accompanying the researcher to interviews in order to translate, or by translating articles, documents etc. (Arabic-English/English-Arabic). We are looking for freelancers with a professional or educational background in one of the fields of interest. This way you can provide an opportunity for the foreign scholar to increase their contacts with Egyptian colleagues and to learn from their expertise. For you, involvement will not only offer an opportunity to work, but will also enable you to broaden your network of Dutch and Flemish students and scholars and become involved in, and learn from, their research projects. Since the work will be incidental and flexible, this is an ideal opportunity next to your own studies or job.
The NVIC will set up a database with all the provided data that will be put to the disposal of the scholar once he/she arrives in Cairo. This gives the scholar the opportunity to choose the most suitable assistant and to arrange all the work with them. The Netherlands-Flemish Institute (NVIC) is only responsible for providing the information and contact details of the interpreter / research assistant. The NVIC is not responsible for further agreements regarding fees, payments, schedules and any other arrangements. Both the researcher and the interpreter/assistant are responsible for mutually agreeing on matters of confidentiality, anonymity etc.
If you are interested in our pool; please send us your CV, a motivation letter, approximate gross rate per hour (final rate to be agreed upon with the scholar) and information about your availability (most suitable working days/hours).
